Santosh Subramaniam (2008)
Santosh Subramaniam made as a family entertainer without any vulgarity or violence is a safe remake of the Telugu blockbuster Bommarillu (starring Siddharth and Genelia in the lead) which bagged seven Nandi Awards. The film’s cast includes Prakashraj, Geetha, Santhanam, Sayaji Shinde, Prem G. Amaran, Sathyan, Keerath, Sadagopan Ramesh, Kousalya, Vijayakumar, M.S. Bhaskar and Pushpavanam Kuppusamy.
Starring: Jayam Ravi, Prakash Raj, Genelia, Kausalya, Geetha, Premji
Direction: Raja
Music: Devi Sri Prasad
Production: AGS Entertainment Pvt Ltd
The story of revolves around Santhosh (Jeyam Ravi) who hails from an affluent family with loving parents (Prakash Raj and Geetha) and siblings around him. His life might look great to a person from outside. But Jeyam Ravi is frustrated and he pours his heart to Anu Hassan, which is where the movie begins and ends. The reason for his frustration is what the movie is all about!

Santosh is interested in a love marriage and waits to meet his lady love. This is when he comes across Hasini (Genelia) a vibrant and ever-smiling girl. He immediately falls in love. He is confident about his love for her and even winning back her love. But something stops him from telling her. Since love cannot be hidden it comes out. As is common in all families, their love is not easily accepted. Prakash Raj has a very strong reason for doing so. However, Santosh keeps insisting and this pushes him to think over it. The fact that Santhosh and Hasini are from very different backgrounds threatens to stand in the way of their relationship and it almost breaks them apart. But love is not easily undone and the movie ends in their union.
Jeyam Ravi fits his role perfectly and has done justice to acting especially in scenes where he lets loose all his pent-up feelings. Genelia is portrayed a bubbly, lively and innocent girl and she sizzles in the songs. Santhanam, Premji and Sreenath as Ravi’s friends do their respective roles well in the comedy and some of their scenes are fun to watch. Sadagopan Ramesh, who plays the role of Ravi’s elder brother has less to perform. Sayaji Shinde’s role as Genelia’s father does not sit well on him. Prakash Raj, a well proven artist has proved his mettle once again in this family entertainer.

Music by Devi Sri Prasad is commendable. He has taken a variety of singers depending upon the moods of the film, and this has worked out well for him. The ‘Eppadi Irundha’ song has one of the best locations and is a visual treat. The camera and art too should be appreciated. One has to have patience while watching as a few scenes between Ravi and Genelia run for too long and could have been trimmed, especially considering the fact that the movie runs for three hours. This could have been avoided with better screenplay.
In all, Santosh Subramaniam is a good family entertainer. It gives a memorable experience. Watch it to know more! For now watch the trailer here.
