REVIEW
In this movie, Kamal Haasan is the pens of the story, screenplay and dialogue apart from sporting 10 different looks in his new film, ‘Dasavatharam’. Playing the female lead is Asin, with Jayapradha and Mallika Sherawat in crucial roles. The cast also includes Napoleon, Santhana Bharathi and M S Bhasker. The film introduces to the Tamil arena Himesh Reshammiya, the popular music director of Hindi films. The film is directed by K S Ravikumar.
The story, not much of which is revealed out, seems like a travel back in time. One of the roles has Kamal playing Rangaraj Nambi, the episode set in the 12th century. Sharing frames with him here is Napoleon as Kulothunga Chozhan. The Chidambaram temple, horses, elephants, and the set all added to the ambiance. The scene depicted Nambi’s distress when Chozhan throws the idol of the Lord into the sea.
Yet another role has Kamal playing a scientist, the episode set a few centuries back, in America. A set of a laboratory was designed by art director Prabhakar, where the scientist does his research. The episode includes the lab being destroyed in an accident, paving way for the next adventure.
A sizzling dance number was picturised on Mallika Sherawat at different locations and night spots in Malaysia. Accompanying Mallika were 20 dancers from the US, and choreographing the number was Brinda.
The shots were canned by cinematographer Ravi Varman. Produced by V Ravichandran for Oscar Films Pvt Ltd, ‘Dasavatharam’ is a film awaited with great anticipation by the audience.

Dasavatharam is a superb movie, probably one of the most intellectual movies ever made in the Asian region. When watching the movie, one can only appreciate & fully understand this marvellous piece of work by ditching the typical Tamil movie template, which consists of:
1. Sudden duets in unrelated settings
2. Comedian appearing out of nowhere in a separate storyline
3. Rubbish punch dialogues
4. Outrageous stunts such as flying through the air, catching bullets with their bare hands
5. Many more (Refer to Vijay’s movies post 2003)
Dasavatharam excels in various aspects. Here r several disambiguations of my review:
1.First of all is d cinematography, which was state of d art work by Ravi Varman, with various angles, lighting etc. He adds an extra dimension to a better cinematic viewing experience, with those rotations, zooms etc. He carried on d good work from Anniyan n Vettaiyadu.
2.Secondly was d BGM. Initially I was disappointed that Devi Sri did d job instead of H.Jeyaraj or ARR, but then d young man came up with a splendid piece of work, especially d background score for Balaram, Avtar, Shingen n d Beagle 2 lab, apart from d fight scenes.
3.Direction was just average, probably Kamal ghost directed d movie. KS Ravi is not a person for a movie like Dasa. Should hv approached Shankar b4 he signed up 4 Sivaji. He would hv reignited d magic of Indian/Hindustani, as he can combine class n grandeur into one.
4.Only a few songs like Mukundha, Oh Sanam n Ulaganayagan were nice. Kallai mattum had powerful lyrics, but d music was a blatant copywork. Again,Harris Jayaraj should hv been hired. Karuppanukkum should not hv been in d movie.
5.The plot was superbly constructed based on Chaos Theory. Each character had an equal importance, contrary to many ppl’s perception. They were there to express different religious viewpoints, ideologies, apart from dictating each others’s subsequent actions in d movie. However d Bush character seemed to be a mockery of d current US president.
6.The CGI was above average, although not on par with Hollywood standards. However, for an Indian movie, it’s top class. D beginning of d Tsunami, D puppet show in Mukundha song were all nice. Regarding d makeup, this I admit was a slight disappointment as Bush’s n Fletcher’s look fake, sort of an exaggeration of a Caucasian’s looks. D best were that of Poovaragan,Balaram,Nambi,Avtar n Govind. Some of d faces look disproportionate, as of Shingen n Bush, which looked 2 big.
7.Acting, I don’t hv 2 comment, was excellent 4 Kamal. He had 2 learn so many accents like d typical American,Japanese,Thirunelveli ones in a short time period,n on top of that assigning an individual voice 4 each character.Kudos 2 Asin 4 dropping her glamour girl image n trying something new. Both Kothai Radha n Aandal were exceptional. One should not blame her 4 that nuisance role as that were d requirements of d script.Napolean was good 2.
In sort, I would like to say that no one else other than Kamal can produce a movie like Dasavatharam in the near foreseeable future. It will b interesting 2 c how future multiple role movies like Kanthasamy fare in d box office.
One cannot compare Sivaji with Dasavatharam. Sivaji is just a typical good vs bad story overhyped with posh overseas locations, Shreya’s glamour etc. Dasavatharam did not exaggerate, it was d hype n general expectations which made it seem such.
My rating 4 Dasavatharam : 4.5/5. Enjoy d movie everyone.
